Following the devastation caused to farms, homes, and local infrastructure in Raigad by Cyclone Nisarga, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray has directed the authorities to expedite works on coastal projects in the region. The CM gave out the details at a review meeting of the NCRMP (National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project) projects.

The CM is also believed to have asked that the construction of cyclone shelters and the laying of underground cabling be prioritized. The CM has also asked for lightning arresters to be placed in regions that are prone to lightning and severe thunderstorms. These projects will be undertaken by the NCRMP.

While Cyclone Nisarga didn’t cause severe damage to property in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, regions like Raigad, Sindhudurg, Palghar, and Ratnagiri were the most impacted. An official familiar with the matter disclosed that the State Government has set aside Rs 53 crore for the development of an Early Warning Dissemination System in the regions.

“Eleven multi-purpose cyclone shelters will now be constructed in the coastal area. Cement slab would be put up on tin sheet roofs, which were damaged in the cyclone,” said Kishorraje Nimbalkar, Secretary (Relief and Rehabilitation).

As per data provided by the officials, the rehabilitation work assigned to the NCRMP has valued at Rs 397.97 crore while underground cabling work worth Rs 203 crore is ongoing at Alibaug, Ratnagiri, and Satpadi (Palghar).

Opposition leader (BJP) and ex-Maharashtra CM, Devendra Fadnavis has demanded that the government should provide more relief funds to districts impacted by Cyclone Nisarga

On the brighter side of things, Mumbai recorded its cleanest air of 2020 as Cyclone Nisarga made landfall across Maharashtra.
