The demolition of the Sion Road Over Bridge (ROB) will finally begin on February 29. The proposed 5th and 6th railway line connecting Kurla to Parel is being considered as an important step. The demolition of the bridge was delayed due to the interference of local residents and politicians.

Planned in January, the process was delayed by discussions about the impact on local residents and motorists. A senior Central Railway (CR) official confirmed on Thursday that all related issues have now been resolved, allowing the project to go ahead.

About Sion ROB

Built in 1912, the bridge has served as an important link connecting Dharavi, Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg and Eastern Express Highway. Its impending closure is expected to disrupt east-west traffic flow, potentially leading to congestion on alternative routes such as the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. Motorists will have to re-route via Kurla which connects Eastern Expressway and LBS Marg.

Bridge to remain closed

According to the CR, the demolition work will take about three months, during which the bridge will be closed for vehicular traffic. This critical phase sets the stage for subsequent reconstruction, estimated to take about two years. The combined efforts of the Railways and the BMC are estimated to cost INR 50 crore.

An official said, “Local communities and motorists are trying to change the mode of transport. Successful implementation of the project will increase rail connectivity between Kurla and Parel, there by contributing to the overall infrastructure development of the city. The immediate consequences, however, may pose challenges for travellers.
