On Monday, January 3, India's first Orthotropic Steel Deck (OSD) was launched on the 22km-long Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL). News agency ANI quoted Maharashtra Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde elaborating on how the said link will connect South Mumbai with Navi Mumbai. It will do so by reducing the travel time from 2-2.5 hours to 20-25 minutes, he said.

MMRDA Commissioner SVR Srinivas was quoted by the agency saying, "India's longest sea link project, MTHL, is expected to be completed by 2023 end. These OSDs fabricated in Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan & Myanmar, are being assembled in Mumbai. It'll provide a larger space (b/w 2 pillars) for ship movement"

The OSD is a steel deck structure that will carry motor load efficiently whilst also ameliorating the load-carrying capacity of the bridge in contrast to concrete structures. According to narratives, after attaining the structures, the final assembly will require 15 days of man-hours. After this, the superstructure will be raised on the site.

Based on accounts, the project is anticipated to cost INR 17,843 cr. The link comes equipped with interchanges in Central Mumbai's Sewri, Shivaji Nagar at Mumbai Bay and NH-4 B at Navi Mumbai's Chirle. The utilization of steel decks ensures that ships passing through the channel adjoining MTHL have space to navigate and pass under the bridge.
