The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has started preparing for monsoon and the civic administration accordingly has set May 25 deadline to complete all pre-monsoon related works. The deadline has been set by the civic body, keeping in mind the present coronavirus pandemic.

NMMC Chief Annasaheb Misal directed the health department to take necessary measures in view of the forthcoming monsoon season while taking measures amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside, NMMC has also asked for hospitals to reserve some beds for vector-borne diseases. Although Navi Mumbai is a well-planned city, there are few places that witness water-logging during the monsoon.

NMMC Commissioner has already asked all the departments to prepare a plan for monsoon, keeping the COVID-19 pandemic in mind. Currently, the civic administration is planning to give approval for the repair and construction works online, in the view of the pandemic. Alongside, the town planning department has also been directed to make necessary arrangements for processing.

The work for cleaning of sewers and nullahs along with pruning of trees has already started. A meeting was held recently by NMMC with the police, traffic department, civic defence forces, APMC, MSEDCL, Thane-Belapur Industrial Associations and fisherman’s associations.

Before the onset of monsoon, the civic body will issue the list of dangerous structures in the city for necessary precautions.

Meanwhile, all ward level officers have already been asked to complete the cleaning of gutter and nullah works by May 25. The deputy NMMC commissioner (solid waste management) has been inspecting the work himself.  As per an official, despite the pandemic, the pre-monsoon work has not been affected much and the majority of the work has been completed.
