The water supply of around 50 buildings along Marine Drive in Mumbai has been cut for over two days owing to a major water pipeline that was hit by piling work for the Coastal Road on Saturday, February 6. Meanwhile, the residents from the buildings on Churchgate’s A, B, C, E, F and G Roads have also complained of receiving muddy water.

On the other hand, residents also claimed that BMC did not arrange for alternative water supply by providing water tankers for all buildings.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is carrying out the construction of the coastal road between Princess Street Flyover and Worli over the 9-km stretch that passes by the sea. BMC officials said around 50 buildings at Marine Drive were affected due to the water pipeline burst till Monday, February 8.

According to the BMC officials, after receiving complaints the pipeline was checked, it came to light that a pipeline has been damaged. BMC is likely to impose fine on the contractor for damaging the pipeline. Civic officials are working on the repairs and said that work on repairing the pipeline has been started and it would be completed soon.

Officials from the BMC water supply department said that it took some time to locate the spot where pipeline was damaged. The repairs took time as it took a while to detect the pipeline burst. The burst led to flooding too. The source of the pipeline burst could only be located on Monday morning.

Moreover, Marine Drive residents had complained of facing water cuts and contaminated water in November 2020 too, owing to pipeline burst because of the coastal road work.

The city's Coastal Road is an under construction 8-lane, 22.2-km long freeway that would run along Mumbai's western coastline connecting Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in western suburbs.
