Citizens and pedestrians at Gopalrao Deshmukh Road (Pedder Road) are all too familiar with the dilapidated state of the nearby Kemps Corner bridge. Although the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said that it has initiated major repairs on the bridge, the condition of the bridge has remained almost the same.

Opened for motorists in 1965, the Kemps Corner Bridge has the honour of being the nation’s first flyover. However, the bridge hasn’t seen any repairs since it was opened. The collapse of the Himalaya foot over bridge near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) led to authorities conducting an audit of all the bridges in the city.

Consequently, the civic body issued work orders for the Kemps Road Bridge in September 2020 with an estimated cost of ₹1.44 crores. However, not much has been done since then.

“The plasters have been falling off at regular intervals and we have informed the officials of D ward of the BMC about it. We can feel the bridge’s vibrations. This bridge was to be demolished and a long viaduct constructed. But this plan was postponed due to opposition from local residents,” a traffic constable near the bridge was quoted as saying by Mumbai Mirror

In response, BMC’s Additional Commissioner (Projects), P Velrasu said, “Major repairs to Kemps Corner bridge are in progress. Chipping off the external plaster, wire mesh and plaster will be complete within 10 days. Repairs to the expansion joint and replacements of MS plates, epoxy grouting, epoxy mortar and polymer mortar to structural members, milling on deck and resurfacing and repairs to kerb will be done.”

He further said that additional reinforcement and micro-concreting will be done on the east side of the flyover. “We will try to complete the work by May 31,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Commissioner of the D Ward said that beautification works will be carried out below the flyover. This will reportedly include vertical gardening, landscaping, and setting up sculptures under the corporate social responsibility (CSR) plan with the help of Jindal Steel.
