The work on the much-awaited suburban railway station project between Thane and Mulund got a boost after Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday, July 3, approved a provision of INR 185 crore for construction of platforms, laying of tracks and other essential components of the facility. This was said by Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) officials.
The announcement was made after the meeting of the delegation with Ashwini Vaishnav at Rail Bhavan in New Delhi. According to a report by Times of India, the delegation includes Thane Municipal Corporation Commissioner Saurabh Rao, Shiv Sena MP from Thane Dr Shrikant Shinde and Kalyan, Naresh Mhaske.
As per reports, total cost of the project amounts to INR 264 crore. Out of which, INR 185 crore has been earmarked for operational area development including construction of administration building, laying of railway tracks and preparation of platforms. This cost, initially borne by the Thane civic body under its Smart City initiative, will now be borne by the Ministry of Railways, the report said.
The decision will ease the financial burden on the already strained municipal board and avoid potential delays in the project. However, the Thane Municipal Corporation will still be responsible for funding the development of the station premises, such as roads, elevated roads connecting highways, parking bays and bus stations etc.
According to reports, approximately 30% of the work on the project, which started in 2019, has been completed so far. 100% work will be completed by December 2025. Once the project is operational, the new station is expected to effectively reduce the passenger load at Thane station. Many commuters from nearby Mulund and Godhbandar areas of Thane will prefer to use this new facility. The development of this project is seen as an important step to improve the transport infrastructure and meet the growing passenger demand in the mega city.
