Officials at the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) recently announced a decision of setting up a seafarer's center in the port area which will be beneficial for passenger sailors. As per reports, the center will be set up by the Port Trust and the sailors from home and abroad will be able to buy items, both essential and ones for leisure.
The concept of a seafarer centre or building is common in ports across the world, which allows the sailors to take a break or rest for a while. The port in Mumbai was set up by the British era and officials informed about constraints of setting up such services earlier. However, the plan has been approved. and with the new centre, the sailors will now be able to visit the the port for leisure.

Mumbai Port Trust's seafarer centre will have a restaurant, shop for essential items, gym, billiard table, spa and salon, internet and telephone facilities, etc. Besides this, officials are also planning a small library and a television set which will help in entertaining the sailors during their leisure hours.
In order to begin the process, the trust has invited applications from companies interested in collaborating for the project. Officials confirmed that the centre will be set up through a public-private partnership.
Earlier this year, the Mumbai Port Trust also signed MoUs worth INR 7,510 crores with an aim to boost boost tourism. As per reports, a total of 13 MoUs were signed in order to improve the water transport system and tourism in Mumbai. The decision was taken ahead of the Maritime India Summit held this year, and the information was shared by MbPT Chairperson, Rajiv Jalota in February 2021.
