Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray earlier on Thursday, December 24, directed authorities to expedite the plan for building a coastal road in Navi Mumbai that is to provide seamless connectivity to the Navi Mumbai airport.

Moreover, Eknath Shinde, the State Urban Development Minister, demanded that the airport be named after the Shiv Sena founder, the late Bal Thackeray. Born in January 1926, Thackeray was the founder of the Shiv Sena party in the state of Maharashtra. The Shiv Sena stalwart had formed the party in a bid to challenge the presence of south Indian migrants in the city back in the 1960s.

Through Marmik, Thackeray campaigned against the growing influence of the non-Marathi’s in Bombay as he drew pictures of Indian politics and society, illustrating the plight of the Marathi people. Often referred to as a mascot of Marathi pride, Balasaheb Thackeray had the ability to rouse extreme emotions and a sense of belonging that made him the cultural icon that he is today.

However, in recent developments, as per reports, the state-run City Industrial and Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) is implementing the road project. Thackeray, review several ongoing projects, insinuated that the party is ready to dislodge the BJP for the Navi Mumbai corporation, the polls for which are due.

Back in 2015, the NCP had won the most number of seats (52 out of 111) and come to power in the civic body, but all of its 52 corporators had later defected to the BJP. On the other hand, the Shiv Sena has 42 corporators in the Navi Mumbai civic body.
