Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken up a very ambitious project for lakhs of commuters in Mumbai and Thane. The construction of the 13.9 km long and fully elevated six-lane corridor of the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension has begun.

MMRDA informed about the project in a post on Twitter on Monday, December 1. After the completion of this high-speed corridor, the travel time between South Mumbai and Thane will be reduced to just 25-30 minutes.

Currently, the Eastern Express Highway is the busiest route in Mumbai. Lakhs of commuters travel from here every day. This project will be very important in reducing traffic congestion on this highway.

Connectivity to Samruddhi Highway

The project has been designed for high-speed travel. In Thane, this elevated route will be connected to the Anand Nagar-Saket elevated route near the old Mulund toll plaza. The high-speed corridor will also provide connectivity to the Samruddhi Highway.

The corridor will run from Anand Nagar, Thane, to Chheda Nagar, Ghatkopar, with key links at Mulund, Airoli, JVLR, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Mankhurd and Ghatkopar.

This will provide faster, safer and greener travel for lakhs of citizens. It is also expected to boost economic development in the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The design has been modified as per the advice of environmental experts and activists to save 127 Pink Trumpet trees in the Vikhroli-Ghatkopar stretch. Nearly 4,175 new trees will be planted as compensation to further strengthen the green cover in this area.

Key features of the project

  • The project includes 2.5-metre diameter monopiles, 40-metre span reinforced piers and a 25-metre single-segment superstructure.
  • The corridor will use single-pile, single-pier system, which is being used for the first time in the MMR.
  • In addition, there will be up and down ramps near Mulund Check Naka, Airoli Junction and Vikhroli Junction.
  • Also, a six-lane elevated toll plaza will be constructed near Navghar flyover.
  • Designed for uninterrupted, safe, high-speed movement
