Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) will be building 190 houses for Specially Abled people who are homeless in Thane. These house will be sold via a lottery and are considered to be the biggest housing scheme for the Divyangjans in the state.

A total of 900 houses will be built under Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP) in Thane, of which, 190 houses will be reserved for the specially abled people.

Usually under BSUP, the state and central government provide grants but in this case, there are some houses that TMC will be constructing by using its own money.

TMC’s Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sandeep Malviya said that BSUP is a group development scheme and under this, slum dwellers residing at the place where the projects are being carried out will be permanently rehabilitated. He added that under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, the TMC is amongst 63 cities across the country which has to provide basic infrastructure and basic amenities for the purpose of living and livelihood of the poor in the city.

So far, 3808 homes have been completed, out of which, 3544 have been reserved for a permanent beneficiary and have been transferred as well. The work on the remaining 2520 houses is in progress and will be completed by October 2018.
