The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is advancing work on the ambitious Virar–Alibaug Multimodal Corridor, a key infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The proposed 126-km access-controlled corridor will connect Virar in Palghar district to Alibaug in Raigad district, passing through Thane and Navi Mumbai. Designed with 8 to 14 lanes, the project is expected to ease congestion in Mumbai by diverting heavy traffic outside the city.

According to a report by Loksatta, commuters using the corridor may have to pay a toll ranging between INR 765 and INR 1,000 for the full stretch, depending on the vehicle type. The proposed toll rates have drawn attention as the project moves forward.

With an estimated cost of over INR 55,000 crore, a significant portion of the expenditure will go toward land acquisition. The corridor will also improve connectivity to key infrastructure such as Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Navi Mumbai International Airport, and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu).

Planned as a multimodal route, the corridor will include provisions for public transport systems such as metro and bus networks. Once completed, it is expected to reduce travel time significantly and boost regional development.

The project is likely to be implemented in phases, with completion targeted around 2030, though challenges related to land acquisition and rehabilitation remain.
