Authorities have warned that areas like Dharavi, Mahim, and Dadar may face some shortage of water over the coming days. This comes as a junior engineer from the G North ward tested positive for the coronavirus a couple of days ago.

As a consequence, around 30 workers from the water supply and maintenance department have been put under quarantine. On average, the G North ward gets water for 1.5 to 2 hours every evening, and this new crisis could restrict the flow further.

Assistant commissioner Kiran Dighavkar said - “At present, there are only five workers who will need to move between 30 spots to open the valves and then back to close them”. He added that the affected workers are currently in 14-day quarantine and will be tested as well. While there are workers coming in from the G-South ward, there is likely to be at least a temporary hindrance in the timely supply of water.

In the meantime, Ajay Rathor, a civic hydraulic engineer said that the department has made alternative arrangements from local wards, so there should be no water cuts at the moment. He clarified that there were some issues with water supply on Wednesday, but those have been sorted.

“Our lakes are also full, thanks to last year’s monsoon. So, fortunately, no water cuts are expected in Mumbai until June,” Rathor added.

With Mumbai’s civic officials and other frontline workers contracting the virus, BMC workers have now asked for mandatory testing for all employees over the next couple of days. This comes as a BMC inspector recently lost his life after developing pneumonia-like symptoms due to COVID-19. Mumbai Police has also been impacted by the virus as two police constables passed away last week.

There’s an urgent need for the protection of the police, civil workers, doctors, and nurses from this virus. It is hoped that the authorities do the needful to ensure those at the frontlines are provided maximum protection from the deadly disease.
