MRTP act to charge premium on illegal strcuctures

The state assembly gave nod to the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act to allow the government to charge a premium on residents and owners of illegal and unauthorised structures built before December 2015. After paying the charge, the building will not be demolished until further notice. The bill was cleared by the Assembly, and will now be passed by the legislative Council.

Along with Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad has a lot of illegal structures. If this bill gets cleared, then it will bring relief to lakhs of citizens residing in the above-mentioned cities.
The amendment will make way for the provisions to control illegal developments by giving power to the planning authority or the municipal corporation to issue a notice of 24 hours to owners before demolishing illegal additions to their buildings.
