Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday kick started its election campaign ahead of the Maharashtra assembly elections which are scheduled on October 21.

With environmental issues and "Aarey Bachao Andolan (Save Aarey Movement)" being the key centre, AAP's election campaign was initiated under the leadership of the party's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh.

AAP has opposed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Tree Authority decision to cut down 2,700 trees in Aarey colony for the construction of the proposed Metro 3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) car shed.

Singh met the local Adivasis residing in different 'padas' across the Aarey forest and assured them that his party would take this issue in the parliament and will demand to declare Aarey as a "forest" and heritage green belt so that it can remain protected.

The government is interested in commercialisation even at the cost of ecology, our party will put an end to this practice," Singh asserted.

Earlier, AAP declared its first list of candidates in a press conference where party's national spokesperson Preeti Menon said that if AAP doesn't come in alliance with any other party, it will contest the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections alone.
