From Tuesday, March 8, after almost four decades, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be run by an administrator who reports stated is BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal. The Maharashtra government has appointed the BMC commissioner as administrator, cited accounts.

Owing to this occurrence, certain committees such as the statutory standing committee, improvement committee and law committee will now cease to exist, stated reports.

According to accounts, officials have alleged that the BMC could appoint a committee entailing four additional commissioners to help the commissioner. Later, each department head will present their case to the administrator and the concerned deputy municipal commissioner and ward officers will be invited.

It has been reported that the administrator will have the final say in approving a proposal. Suresh Kakani, the additional municipal commissioner, was quoted in narratives elaborating on how the authority to approve proposals will now be with the administrator till the BMC elections are conducted.

In the backdrop of the approaching elections, parties are believed to have asked their corporators to be in touch with the people and offer their services to their ward.

It was back in the early 1980s that the municipal elections were postponed. It was during the tenure of former municipal commissioner D M Sukthankar that the elections were delayed. This was the first time when additional municipal commissioners were asked to assist the commissioner in operating the civic authority.
