Union Home Minister Amit Shah has weighed in on the controversy over bag inspections during the Maharashtra assembly elections, responding to Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray's complaints. Shah shared a video on social media showing election officials inspecting his bags after his helicopter landed in Hingoli.

Emphasizing the BJP's commitment to electoral transparency, Shah stated in a post on X, "The BJP fully supports free and fair elections by following all rules set by the Election Commission. It is our shared duty to uphold a strong and transparent democracy." Shah's statement was seen as a defense of the Election Commission's procedures amidst growing political tensions.

Compliance with Election Rules

According to Rameshwar Rodge, Deputy District Election Officer of Hingoli, such inspections are routine and follow standard operating procedures. These checks are mandatory for helicopters used during election campaigns. If anything objectionable is found, relevant authorities like the police, excise, or income tax departments are informed for further action. Official's clarification aimed to address concerns over whether the inspections targeted specific political figures.

The controversy escalated earlier in the week when Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputies, Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, released similar videos showing their own bags being inspected. This move appeared to be a coordinated effort to counter Thackeray's accusations of bias. However, Thackeray, who expressed anger after his bags were checked upon landing in Yavatmal, questioned the impartiality of the process. In a video circulated on social media, he asked whether leaders like Shinde, Fadnavis, Shah, or even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had undergone similar inspections.
