Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders including Pravin Darekar and Prasad Lad on Tuesday were detained by Mumbai Police for protesting outside the Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai. The demonstration was organised to express displeasure against the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government for not allowing the reopening of temples in the state.

Pravin Darekar, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Council, led the protest outside the famous temple in Mumbai on Tuesday morning. The protestors tried to enter the temple forcibly amid heavy police deployment while trying to defy lockdown rules.

“Liquor and wine shops have been opened, even with home delivery options. But who will think about those who want to visit the temple for their mental peace? government is not thinking about those whose livelihood depends on temples. This government is full of ego,” Darekar said.

The protest was also held in Shirdi outside Sai Baba temple. BJP had earlier informed that Maharashtra BJP President Chandrakant Patil will also join the protestors in Shirdi.

The religious leaders and devotees in Maharashtra observed a fast for a few hours to register their protest against the state government over the delay in the decision to reopen temples in the state.

The opposition parties in Maharashtra have been pressuring the state government to allow the reopening of temples. Apart from BJP, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), Ramdas Athawale-led Republican Party of India (A) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) have all demanded that the religious places open.
