The city of Mumbai, on Monday, October 12, experienced an unexpected power supply in the morning, and the entire city was on a standstill. While the local train services stopped as is, COVID19 wards across hospitals also suffered, though the ministry asked the officials to arrange for backup immediately to ensure patients' safety.

Questioning this incident, leaders from Maharashtra's opposition party, BJP, took to social media to voice their concerns thereby asking about the same. Former Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, asked, "Can we hope MVA State Government takes a proactive approach as #PowerFailure has hit Mumbai and it’s getting even worst especially due to #COVID19 times? Who is responsible for this sudden jolt in life of a common man & Mumbai coming to a standstill all of a sudden?#PowerOutage?"

The power supply in the metropolis was suddenly cut off due to a breakdown in the system at MSEDCL's Kalwa substation. As per reports, the grid failure hit the services of all power distributors such as MSEDCL, Adani, BEST and Tata, due to which the traffic on the Western and Central Railways came to a complete standstill and the locals remained on the tracks. Passengers had to travel on foot to the nearest possibility. Besides this, the traffic signals on the roads were also shut down, due to which the traffic was disrupted. Power supply at the hospitals across the city was and the scheduled Mumbai University exams were also postponed.

The government took steps immediately and some power supply was restored across several areas within two and a half hours, and gradually the operations resumed in the city. However, the BJP has strongly criticized the ruling party and demanded an inquiry into who is responsible for the whole of Mumbai.

The opposition strongly reacted to this and considering the impact of the sudden power outage on Mumbai, especially during COVID19 pandemic, leaders have stated that the Mahavikas Aghadi government should take an initiative in this regard and find out the one responsible for disrupting the lives of Mumbaikars, further stating that concrete steps will be taken and responsibilities have to be determined.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting at his residence - Varsha - with regards to the same, and this was attended Energy Minister Nitin Raut, Minister of State for Energy Prajakt Tanpure and Energy Secretary Asim Gupta, and many others. Officials are working towards understanding more about the outage, the repair work, and the solutions which need to be taken to ensure such a breakdown can be prevented in the future.
