While the NAAC is being evaluated, the state government has arbitrarily appointed registrars in Mumbai University. BJP leader MLA Ashish Shelar has expressed the possibility of this affecting the evaluation of the university. Shelar also accused the Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Uday Samant, of having a 'feudalism' in the university.

Accusing the Thackeray government, Ashish Shelar said that while the Mumbai University was preparing for the NAAC assessment, the state government suddenly appointed new registrars in the Mumbai University on January 8. The state government intervened in the university again even though the vice-chancellor had appointed the registrar in charge as per the university law.

The vice-chancellor had written a letter to the state government on January 14 warning that a change of registrar would affect the assessment as there was a NAAC assessment. The Thackeray government will be responsible if this change affects the assessment, said Ashish Shelar. He has also accused the university of moving towards a government corporation.

"We oppose any decision that is not in the interest of the students and we will fight against it," he said.

Since the Thackeray government came to power in the state, the autonomy of universities has been threatened. As soon as the higher education minister took office, he had arbitrarily decided to cancel the final year exams by ousting the UGC, the university, the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor and the Senate, said Shelar.
