The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been demanding that the Maharashtra government should allow reopening of temples in the state. Now, it has become adamant on seeking permission to organise Ram Leela.

Mumbai BJP General Secretary Amarjeet Mishra has sought the intervention of Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari requesting that he should direct the Chief Minister to consider their demands for organising Ram Leela in the state.

“It should be noted that in these circumstances, the state government has allowed liquor shops and bars to open but has kept temples - which strengthens the faith of the people - closed,” Mishra said.

In his letter, the BJP leader said that the government’s decision to stop the religious activities and Ram Leela shows were illogical since all sectors have been unlocked. He said that Ram Leela should also be considered as part of the unlocking activity.

Mishra along with BJP leader Pravin Darekar held a meeting with Ram Leela association across Mumbai and Maharashtra. He said that Ram Leela is being performed in Mumbai and its neighbouring districts for decades and not allowing the same would cause trouble for the organisers next year.

The BJP leader has asked the Governor to order the state government to take a decision in this regard.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Ram Kadam wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray urging him to provide permission to celebrate Ram Leela in the state.

Kadam said that Ram Leela has been celebrated since ages in Maharashtra and it should be allowed followed by COVID-19 protocols and with due precautions. The BJP leader also demanded that the Maharashtra government should allow reopening of religious places and temples across the state for devotees.
