The decision to rename Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar has already caused a stir among the political circles in Maharashtra and the same has not been appreciated by former ruling party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Addressing the same, several leaders shared their opinion stating that the decision has not been taken wisely.

Former Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, also slammed the Shiv Sena and Congress regarding the decision, stating that the demand is being made keeping the upcoming Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections in mind. These polls are scheduled to be held in 2022, and several Shiv Sena leaders from the locality have been demanding the change.

Furthermore, the previous demand was raised by the Sena over 20 years back and the proposal was passed in June 1995 at the AMC. This was then challenged by a Congress corporator in the high court and later in the Supreme Court. Sharing more information, Fadnavis said the decision was taken when he was in power and a letter was written by the Sena leaders, however, no action or steps were taken to implement the same then.

On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye shared that the request regarding the name change was ignored when the BJP-Sena government was in power. Back in time, Aurangabad Mayor from Sena was asked by the corporators from the party to consider the same, which was ignored. He took to Twitter to slam the current government regarding the decision.
