On Friday, November 6, the Bombay High Court heard the habeas corpus petition moved by Republic TV Chief Arnab Goswami challenging his arrest by the Maharashtra Police for his alleged role in the suicide case of Anvay Naik.

However, the Bombay High Court is to resume the hearing at 12 PM tomorrow, November 7. While adjourning the matter the Court observed that it will not pass an order without hearing all parties. In the High Court, Goswami was represented by senior counsel Harish Salve and Abad Ponda at the virtual hearing. They sought his interim release arguing that Goswami’s arrest was ‘completely illegal’.

However, asserting that all parties will be heard, Justice Shinde suggested Arnab's counsel Abad Ponda to move the bail application on the administrative side for the Chief Justice to pass it to the division bench. In a statement, arguing for Arnab's release, senior advocate Harish Salve stated that no permission had been taken by the police for reopening the abetment of suicide case as per the order of the Chief Judicial Magistrate.

In the past, back in 2018, Anvay Naik, who was found dead at the first floor of his farmhouse at Kavir Village in Alibaug had left an alleged suicide note accusing Arnab Goswami. However, the case was closed and was only reopened after Naik’s daughter met the DIG and produced more evidence. This led to the DIG initiating an enquiry against police inspector Suresh Warade, who had handled the case, for closing it ‘without investigating thoroughly’.
