In a recent development ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, Congress candidate Asif Zakaria has filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission against his opponent, Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar. Zakaria, who is contesting for the Vandre West assembly seat, claims that Shelar failed to disclose key details about his wife Pratima’s business assets in his election affidavit, an action Zakaria alleges might have been deliberate.
The issue has drawn significant attention as Varsha Gaikwad, Mumbai Congress president, backed Zakaria’s claim. Gaikwad emphasized that the information omitted by Shelar is publicly accessible through the Ministry of Corporate Affairs portal, adding that the Congress party has lodged a strong objection and is demanding a full investigation into the matter. Gaikwad expressed concerns that such an omission reflects a lack of transparency, calling for accountability in all disclosures by public representatives.
Stronghold to BJP
The Bandra West assembly constituency, known for its unique blend of luxurious residences, bustling slum areas, and middle-income localities like Santacruz and Khar, has become a focal point in this election. Formerly a Congress stronghold, Bandra West shifted to BJP control in 2014, with Ashish Shelar taking the lead as a high-profile leader within Mumbai's political landscape. Now, Shelar is seeking a third consecutive term, having previously defeated Zakaria in the 2019 election by a significant margin of over 26,000 votes. Bandra West holds a voter base of 287,657, with a fairly even split between men and women. Known for being home to Bollywood celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, the constituency sees a steady influx of visitors and has a diverse mix of residents. Despite its affluent image, Bandra West also faces critical challenges, particularly in areas like Khar Danda, where residents grapple with housing shortages, slum redevelopment restrictions, and limited basic amenities.
Campaign Focus
Throughout his campaign, Ashish Shelar has emphasized local issues and development projects, focusing on urban revitalization and beautification. Shelar’s supporters point to his initiatives in redeveloping local ‘gaothans,’ creating open spaces, and improving roads. They argue that his tenure has helped raise property values through targeted development efforts, benefiting both affluent and middle-income communities. Shelar’s beautification projects include a Bollywood-themed decor along 350 metro pillars within the constituency, which adds a cultural appeal to the area. Additionally, he has been addressing new traffic congestion issues arising from the northern extension of Mumbai’s coastal road, aiming to ease mobility for local residents and commuters.
Transparency and Development
With Election Day approaching, transparency and accountability are becoming major talking points, alongside promises of development. Zakaria, seen by many in the constituency as a responsive leader, is capitalizing on these concerns by highlighting the Congress party’s previous contributions to Bandra West. Meanwhile, Shelar’s team defends his record, citing his efforts in securing funding for redevelopment and local improvements.
