The newly elected president of the Mumbai Divisional Congress, MLA Bhai Jagtap, on Sunday, December 20, announced that the Congress will contest the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2022 on its own.

“The Municipal Corporation's upcoming elections will be fought on its own. In a total of 227 wards, all our candidates will contest on the Congress symbol. Earlier, despite being in the lead with the NCP in the state, the Congress had fought independently in Mumbai and will continue to contest the elections alone. The seat-sharing is a difficult task,” Jagtap clarified.

Bhai Jagtap said that despite the fact that the Congress is a part of ruling Maharashtra's Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) along with the Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Congress will work to address the issues of Mumbaikars.

"As far as BMC elections are concerned, we are not part of MVA. In Mumbai, we are strong and have workers in every ward. We are capable of winning the elections on our own," said the Congress MLA.

Currently, the Shiv Sena is in power in the BMC and the Congress is functioning as the main Opposition party. The BJP is determined to dislodge the Sena and has started the preparation through ‘Mission Mumbai’.

Jagtap said he would try to unite all the experienced leaders to increase the number of seats. He expressed confidence that once the appointments are announced by the High Command, all will start working in unison.

Meanwhile, the top leaders in the MVA government have been advocating that all three parties should fight the elections for all local bodies together to defeat the BJP.
