After the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the dates for the Lok Sabha elections in the country, several leaders from the opposition parties including Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are shifting their loyalties.

In a setback to the opposition parties and mega-alliance in Maharashtra, a few days ago, Sujay Vikhe Patil – the son of Congress and Opposition leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil – joined BJP followed by the admission of Ranjitsinh Mohite Patil, the son of NCP leader Vijaysinh Mohite Patil.

Meanwhile, Congress and former Opposition leader in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Pravin Chheda also joined BJP on Friday in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Chheda was earlier fielded by Congress in BMC elections from Ghatkopar and defeated BJP candidate Parag Shah. Before this, Chheda was a member of the BJP and left the party because of his clashes with BJP leader Prakash Mehta.

BJP on Thursday announced its first list naming 184 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha in April this year. In Mumbai, BJP has listed Gopal Shetty and Poonam Mahajan from city’s North and North Central constituency, respectively. However, the suspense regarding the Mumbai North-East LS seat remains.

Shiv Sena, the ally of BJP in Maharashtra, has opposed the seat for current MP Kirit Somaiya from Mumbai North-East in the LS poll. With this, there are speculations of Chheda replacing Somaiya to contest LS poll from the latter’s constituency.
