A war of words has ignited between the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra, which comprises of Congress, Shiv Sena, NCP, and the Central Government led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his remarks on the state behind the spread of coronavirus.

Several ministers of the MVA government lashed back at the PM Modi for stating that Congress was standing at Mumbai station and scaring innocent labourers into fleeing to their native states in Parliament on Monday, February 7.

"The Congress Party has crossed all limits during the first wave COVID-19 pandemic. During the first wave, when people were following lockdowns, in the entire world guidelines were suggesting that people stay where they are... then Congress leaders were standing at Mumbai station and scaring innocent people. They pushed migrant workers in Mumbai to return to their states," the PM said in his reply to the Motion of Thanks debate in Lok Sabha.

The PM said that the (Congress) had crossed all limits and committed a 'Paap' (sin) and a 'mahaapradh'... "pushed migrant labourers into difficulties."

"Congress gave free train tickets to migrant workers to leave Mumbai. This led to the spread of COVID in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand. What kind of politics is this? How long will this politics will continue? The entire country is shocked by the behavior of Congress," he added.

Reacting on the same, later in the day, Maharashtra unit of Congress said that the Centre ran away from its responsibility during the coronavirus pandemic whereas the party facilitated the return of migrant workers.

Moreover, Maharashtra ministers Balasaheb Thorat and Ashok Chavan termed PM Modi's comments in Lok Sabha “unfortunate” that did not behove his post. They said the Centre was trying to hide its failures.

Besides, Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik on Tuesday, February 8, hit back claiming the PM's fixation with the 'Namaste Trump' event was responsible for the coronavirus spread in the country.

Meanwhile, addressing a press conference NCP MP Supriya Sule criticised Modi for accusing the opposition of inciting migrants to flee from Mumbai during the COVID-19 lockdown, and claimed more trains were operated from Gujarat than Maharashtra for migrant workers during the pandemic-related curbs.

Sule also referred to a 2020 social media post of the then railway minister Piyush Goyal, who had targeted Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray over the issue of trains for migrant workers.
