Nearly 16 people from staff members working for Maharashtra Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad have been tested positive for the coronavirus or COVID-19. Those who have been tested COVID-19 positive at Jitendra Awhad’s residence include cleaning staff, kitchen staff and other staff members.

Of the 16 people tested COVID-19 positive at Awhad’s residence, five are policemen deployed for the minister. Jitendra Awhad represents the Kalwa-Mumbra constituency in Thane.

Awhad on Monday decided to self-quarantine himself at his residence after it was confirmed that he came in contact with at least one person who had tested COVID-19 positive.

Jitendra Awhad is the first minister to quarantine himself. Awhad was in constant touch with a police officer from Mumbra who was tested positive for the coronavirus. Awhad said that he was in self-quarantine as a precautionary measure to ensure that all other around him are safe.

This comes days after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Jitendra Awhad in a controversy.

Anant Karmuse, an engineer by profession, earlier alleged that the policemen took him to NCP leader Jitendra Awhad’s bungalow instead of the police station where the minister’s men thrashed him with a bamboo stick and belt. The man, in his complaint, has also alleged that Jitendra Awhad was also present.

Karmuse had posted a morphed photo with Jitendra Awhad’s face and a lit-up match stick with a caption, “I protest against the person who has edited the photo.”

BJP leader Kiriti Somaiya was detained from his residence in Mulund after he tried to meet Anant Karmuse amid the lockdown. Somaiya also alleged that Awhad’s men have beaten up Karmuse. The BJP had demanded the state government that Jitendra Awhad be removed from his cabinet post.
