After the Maharashtra government announced salary cut of all elected representatives along with the government employees belonging to Grade A, B and C, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday clarified that the salaries of government employees will not be cut but will be paid in phases.
Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister, Ajit Pawar announced a pay cut off all elected representatives including Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray for the month of March.
The Maharashtra government issued an order stating that all elected representatives in the state legislative assembly and council will get their salary with 60 per cent deduction amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Moreover, the order stated that the state government employees belonging to Grade A and B will get their salaries with 50 per cent cut while grade C employees will get salaries with 25 per cent cut. However, there will be no cut in the salaries of employees belonging to Grade D.
Uddhav Thackeray, however, clarified that these are pay freezes and the salaries will be paid in instalments. This is being done to ensure that things don’t go out of hand amid the coronavirus outbreak, Thackeray added while stating that an economic crisis is expected.
The Chief Minister further informed that the police personnel, health workers and sanitation workers will be given priority in the disbursement of salaries. The salary freeze, however, will also apply to semi-government organisations and aided educational institutions including universities.
Thackeray’s clarification came after the opposition had raised objection against this move by the Uddhav Thackeray government stating that deduction from the salaries of health workers and others working hard to curb the spread of the coronavirus was unacceptable.
Ajit Pawar had also issued clarifications that the salary of all government employees will not be slashed but it will be paid in two instalments in the next month.
Earlier, Ajit Pawar sought a ₹25,000 crore package from the centre for Maharashtra due to health and economic crisis emerging amid the coronavirus outbreak. The central government is yet to release the Goods and Services Tax of Maharashtra which amounts to ₹16,654 crores. Pawar had demanded the same to be released before March 31.
