The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar as a 'National Icon' along with 'Bharat Ratna' to make voters aware about the importance of vote in elections. An MoU for the next 3 years was signed with Sachin Tendulkar at an event organised by the Election Commission of India at Akashvani Rang Bhawan. On this occasion, Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, Election Commissioner Anupchandra Pandey and Arun Goel along with other officials were present.
Sachin Tendulkar said that "For a vibrant democracy like India, youth have an important role in nation building, cheering the country during the sports match, chanting slogans of 'Team India' India India, definitely forward to take forward a prosperous democracy." The easiest but most effective way to do this is to exercise your right to vote, just like a crowd gathers in a stadium to watch a match."
He expressed hope that in the same way, the crowd at the polling booth and the enthusiasm to perform the duty of voting should remain intact in every election. When young voters from every corner of the country participate in the elections, then only our country will move towards prosperity. Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said on the occasion that Sachin Tendulkar is a respected sports personality not only of India but of the world, his entire cricket career has been commendable and remarkable.
Earlier, the Election Commission of India has appointed eminent people from various fields as 'National Icons'. Earlier, famous actors Aamir Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, athlete Mary Kom, M.S. Dhoni has been named as a 'National Icon'.
