A few days back, the state government of Maharashtra, eased the lockdown restrictions for certain districts. However, the state health department has informed that the COVID-19 positivity rate for a few districts is still high. A similar pattern has been observed in the Kolhapur district and understanding the same, Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, on Monday, June 14, 2021, asked the officials to expedite the testing process.

He also asked the citizens to follow the coronavirus (COVID-19) rules and guidelines issued by the state government. A review meeting was recently held to understand the pandemic situation across few districts in the western part of the state and after thorough discussion, Pawar, in an interaction with the media said, "In the first wave of the pandemic, the district administration did a commendable job by controlling the infection. However, the positivity rate in the district in the current second wave is still at the higher side. The review meeting discussed measures like the requirement of drugs etc to check the transmission."

Data released by the state health department mentioned that the tally in Kolhapur, as of Sunday, June 13, 2021, had reached over 1.33 lakh with more than 3,600 deaths.

The local administration has been asked to take strict measures thereby control the spread in the district. As per the directives, patients will now have to be under institutional quarantine and not under home isolation if needed. Moreover, the state health department has asked the civic body to double the tests in the locality, as this will also show an increase in cases and reduce the positivity rate eventually, which will further help the officials make the right decisions.

As of now, Kolhapur has been categorised under level-4 out of the five classification levels drafted by the government. Keeping this in mind, no restrictions have been eased in the district and if the trend continues to remain the same, the rules will eventually become stricter for the citizens in the area.

Pawar also emphasised vaccinating the citizens and universal testing to ensure the cases reduce with time. Sharing more, he said that the number of vaccination centres will be revised once the state government is able to purchase more vaccines. The state government has offered help and asked the local bodies to express their concerns, basis which, solutions will be sought to fight the crisis.
