Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative assembly, Devendra Fadnavis has written a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray demanding a final agreement on the release of water from the Karnataka-based Almatti dam.

In his letter, Fadnavis wrote that the water from Maharashtra’s small and big rivers goes into the Almatti dam which is not released further in enough quantity. It leads to the rise in water level and causes floods during monsoon in several districts including Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara.

“The discharge of water from Almatti dam is the only option to deter floods,” he said while urging the Chief Minister to pursue the matter and provide a solution. Fadnavis, in his letter, has pointed out the need to have an agreement with the Karnataka government over the release of water.

“There’s a lot more water stored in our dams than last year and the meteorological department has predicted 95 to 104 per cent rainfall this year. Therefore, the possibility of a flood situation like last year can’t be ruled out,” the former Chief Minister said.

He urged Thackeray to conduct a meeting with his counterpart in Karnataka to constitute a plan timely. “I hope you will take action in this regard,” Fadnavis wrote.

The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader also highlighted that Karnatak was reluctant to release water from Almatti dam as it leads to flooding here.

Pradip Purandare, a former member of Wadnere committee which was formed to examine last year’s flooding in western Maharashtra, has opposed the findings of the committee. The committee made recommendations which Purandare says can be used against Maharashtra.
