The coronavirus outbreak across the country has disturbed many scheduled. While many parts of the country are under complete lockdown, the Election Commission (EC) has decided to postpone the scheduled Rajya Sabha elections, after March 31. 2020. These elections were earlier planned on Thursday, but the changes were necessary, keeping the critical scenario in mind.

The note released by the EC said, "The prevailing unforeseen situation of public health emergency indicates the need for avoidance of possibilities of gatherings of any nature, which expose all concerned to possible health hazard."

It is also said that the team is looking for a new date and the same shall be announced soon. The note mentioned that the process would have involved many steps and the body said that these may not be suitable, looking at the prevailing unforeseen situation. 

Polls were scheduled for a total of 18 seats -  one from Manipur and Meghalaya.  two in Jharkhand, three from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, and four from Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. The nominations for these seats was closed on Wednesday and have been filed for 55 seats across 17 states, amongst which 37 candidates have been elected.

Further, it is said that since the MLAs were not able to travel due to the restrictions, officials had to consider postponing the elections.
