On Monday, October 4, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered by the Mumbai Police against lyricist Javed Akhtar over his alleged remark against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Mumbai-based lawyer Santosh Dubey filed a complaint, following which an FIR was registered at the Mulund police station. Last month he had sent a legal notice to Akhtar over his alleged RSS remark. He was seeking an apology from him over an alleged remark in an interview against RSS, which was "defamatory and false."

The lawyer, in his notice, stated that the poet-lyricist have committed an offence by making such statements. The offence was under sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In September, security was placed outside Javed Akhtar's Mumbai residence which is near the ISCKON temple in the Juhu area, after a BJP MLA of Maharashtra demanded an apology from him.

Mulund police, while addressing the situation, said that an FIR is registered under Section 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The lawyer, while talking to PTI, said that he had earlier sent a notice to Akhtar seeking an apology for his alleged remark against RSS. However, he failed to do so, and therefore an FIR is filed against him because of his complaint.
