Maharashtra Budget 2020 highlights: Petrol, Diesel to get costlier

The Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government presented the budget of ₹3.9 lakh crore. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who also holds the Finance portfolio, rose before the house to present the ‘populist’ budget.

The Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra presented its maiden budget on Friday. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who also holds the Finance portfolio, rose before the house to present the ‘populist’ budget which focused on providing relief to the farmers among others. 

The Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government presented the budget of ₹3.9 lakh crore. The state government had intended the original budget to be worth ₹3.15 lakh crore. However, the slash in the budget amount comes after the central government failed to provide another ₹7,000 crore.

In the ‘populist’ budget presented by Ajit Pawar, it was announced that the Maharashtra government will levy an additional tax of ₹1 for petrol and diesel. While speaking in the assembly, Pawar talked about creating employment in the state and admitted that there was an economic slowdown.

Here are the major highlights from the Maharashtra budget 2020:

  • Additional financial assistance of ₹7,000 crores to farmers for loan waiver in the year 2020-21.
  • ₹22,000 crores allocated for loan waiver for farmers, the money will be deposited in bank accounts.
  • Maharashtra government launches the Chief Minister Water Preservation Scheme.
  • More than ₹2,000 crores proposed for Crop Insurance scheme.
  • For the coming 5 years, the state government will install 1 lakh solar farming pumps each year.
  • Maharashtra State Transport (ST) to buy 1,600 new bus. Satara will also be included in the Bangalore Mumbai Corridor. ₹4000 crore proposal for Mumbai Bangalore Corridor.
  • In the coming five years, the MVA government will start 21 women hospitals, 21 sub-district hospitals.
  • MVA government plans to start 75 dialysis centres in Maharashtra.
  • ₹10,500 crores for the Public Works Department (PWD) in the state.
  • Navin Maharashtra Shikao Yojana to be started, special training will be given to children in 10th standard.
  • Legislation to be introduced for 80 per cent reservation for locals in jobs.
  • ₹130 crores proposed for self-employment scheme.
  • ₹1000 crore allocated for higher and technical education.
  • ₹5 crores for Marathi Library in Mumbai.
  • Government plans to bring Gender Budget and Special Budget for children.
  • Sanitary napkins will be made available to all middle school students at reasonable rates.
  • ₹5 thousand crores for primary health.
  • ₹300 crores for expansion of 'Shiv Bhojan Thali' started by Maharashtra Government.
  • MVA government plans to plant 50 crore trees.
  • 'Maharashtra Bhavan' to be constructed in Navi Mumbai.
  • A development plan for Haji Ali area will be prepared.
  • MLA's Development fund increased from ₹2 crores to ₹3 crores.
