The Government of India (GoI), on Friday, April 1, 2022, released an annexure informing the total number of dairy cooperatives present in Maharashtra currently. As per reports, the tally stands at 76. Officials have also included the details regarding the district-wise milk production during last five years in the report.

In order to compliment and supplement the efforts made by the States and Union Territories for development and conservation of indigenous cow breeds, the government has been implementing Rashtriya Gokul Mission since 2014 with focus on development and conservation of indigenous bovine breeds, genetic upgradation of bovine population and enhancement of milk production and productivity of bovines.

Under the said scheme the following components have been supported for Maharashtra for increasing milk production per cattle:

  • Implementation of Nationwide Artificial Insemination programme to increase the coverage of Artificial Insemination (AI).
  • Establishment of Multipurpose Artificial Insemination Technician for Rural India for providing AI service at the doorstep of the farmer.
  • Establishment of 3 In-vitro fertilization (IVF) Laboratories to produce High Genetic Merit (HGM) animals.
  • Establishment of Gokul Grams.

National Dairy Plan-Phase I (NDP-I), a Central Sector Scheme was also implemented from 2011-2012 to 2018-19 in the country including Maharashtra. Sub projects covering activities like Bull Production through Imported Embryo (BPTIE), Fodder Development, Ration Balancing Programme, Pedigree Selection (PS) and Strengthening of Semen Stations were undertaken in Maharashtra, which helped in increasing the milk production per cattle.

In addition, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has taken up following activity/programmes in Maharashtra to increase milk production per cattle:

  • Vidarbha and Marathwada Dairy Development Project (VMDDP): NDDB and Government of Maharashtra are jointly implementing „Dairy Development Project in Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra‟ since 2017-18. “Productivity enhancement for improving productivity in animals” is one of the components of the project.
  • Animal Health Programmes: Mastitis Control Programme is implemented in five Milk Unions of Maharashtra viz. Kolhapur, Pune, Rajarambapu, Baramati and Aurangabad. This programme is aimed to reduce the milk production losses by managing sub-clinical and clinical mastitis in bovines.
  • Animal Breeding Activities: 112 HGM bulls produced from Progeny Testing/Pedigree Selection (PS) projects, 3 High Genetic Merit bulls from Bull Production through Imported Embryos (BPTIE) projects and 27 imported bulls have been supplied to semen stations in Maharashtra in the last three years. Further, PS project for Gaolao breed of cattle has been approved recently with a total outlay of Rs. 186.30 Lakh for implementation through MLDB in Maharashtra.
  • A Memorandum of Understanding between Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University, Nagpur (MAFSU) and NDDB has been signed to promote livestock farm development activities including fodder development activities through "scientifically managed production of quality fodder and ethno-veterinary medicinal plants."

Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR)/ Department of Agriculture Research and Education (DARE) has informed that they have no plan presently to establish/open new dairy science/ dairy technical colleges in the country particularly in Maharashtra.
