NCP president Sharad Pawar has decided to step down as NCP president.

At the launch of the second edition of his autobiography, ‘Lok Maze Sangati’, the NCP chief, who founded the party in 1999, said, “I have three years of tenure remaining in Rajya Sabha. I will not contest elections henceforth".

“I started my political career on May 1, 1960. Yesterday we celebrated May day. After this prolonged political career, one must think about stopping somewhere. One must not be greedy.”

Pawar said that a committee be formed consisting of senior NCP leaders, who will decide the future course of action. “The committee will include, Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare, P C Chacko, Narhari Zirwal, Ajit Pawar, Supriya Sule, Jayant Patil, Chhagan Bhujabl, Dilip walse-Patil, Anil Deshmukh, Rajesh Tope, Jitendra Awhad, Hasan Mushrif, Dhananjay Munde, Jaydev Gaikwad and chiefs of party frontal cells,” Pawar said.

After Pawar's announcement of retirement, activists cried profusely. NCP leader Dhananjay Munde got emotional and touched Sharad Pawar's feet.  Also, NCP leader Praful Patel said that Sharad Pawar did not take anyone into confidence before announcing resignation.

NCP party workers started hailing Sharad Pawar and said that they don't approve his decision of resigning as NCP president. They also said that he should reconsider his decision.

Upon the announcement of Pawar's resignation, NCP state president Jayant Patil started shedding tears.

Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) party leader Sanjay Raut tweeted like Balasaheb Thackeray, Sharad Pawar too resigned owing to the dirty politics and allegations.

Sharad Pawar is not the president does not mean that he will not be in the party

NCP leader Ajit Pawar said that Sharad Pawar has heard and seen everyone's feelings. "You are misunderstanding. Sharad Pawar is not the president, it does not mean that he will not be in the party. Today, Kharge is the president of Congress, but Congress is run by Sonia Gandhi. Therefore, considering Sharad Pawar's current age, we are trying to give this responsibility to a new leadership after discussing with everyone. He will work for the party under the guidance of the leadership", said Ajit Pawar on this occasion.

"Sharad Pawar is himself a party. So now Sharad Pawar has taken that decision. But even after that Sharad Pawar is going to guide us. Tomorrow, the new president of the party will also work under the guidance of Sharad Pawar. Why do you think he will only support the minority if he remains president? If there is no president, there will be no standing. It's not in your blood. Our family will continue like this. Don't get emotional", said Ajit Pawar.

Meanwhile, NCP senior leader Jitendra Awhad has tweeted about Sharad Pawar.
