The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Maharashtra has written a letter to Vice President Venkaiah Naidu over the “derogatory” statements issued by Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut against doctors and World Health Organisation (WHO).

On Monday, the IMA Maharashtra apprise the Rajya Sabha chairman about Raut’s comments on “compounders being more knowledgeable than doctors”. It wrote to the Vice President as Sanjay Raut is a Shiv Sena MP in Rajya Sabha. The association asked Naidu to appeal members of Rajya Sabha to stop “mudslinging” and making such “derogatory” remarks against doctor’s community.

Raut’s remarks during his interview with a Marathi news channel have stirred yet another controversy in Maharashtra. He said that compounders are more knowledgeable than doctors. Raut also blamed the World Health Organisation (WHO) for spreading the coronavirus.

“WHO is a group of people. Doctors are also part of their team. Actually, a compounder knows more than the doctor. What does the doctor know? They know nothing. I always take my medicine from a compounder,” Raut said.

Reacting to this, in a meeting of its state executive on August 16, the IMA Maharashtra passed a resolution unanimously condemning the remarks made by Raut. All 216 branches of IMA have demanded Raut’s apology and asked him to take back his words against the doctor’s community.

Apart from writing to the Vice President, the IMA Maharashtra also informed Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari about the incident.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) and the Thane branch of Indian Medical Association (IMA) wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray condemning the remarks made by Raut.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis said that giving such statement amid the coronavirus outbreak was not proper as the doctors are really working hard.
