Days after relaxing curbs in the state, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday, August 15, warned of lockdown if the number of new daily coronavirus cases continued to spike.

Thackeray, during his Independence Day address at Mantralaya, also appealed to people to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour despite the relaxation in restrictions as the availability of medical oxygen was limited.

“We are easing restrictions now. COVID-19 has still not been eliminated so we need to be more alert. Considering the limited availability of medical oxygen, if the number of cases sees a rise, then we will have no other option but to reimpose the lockdown,” he said.

Thackeray also appealed to people to take the pledge to make the state and country COVID-free and celebrate the next Independence Day in a free atmosphere.

The state government, last week, allowed malls, gyms, salons and spas to reopen. Moreover, the general public has also been permitted to board local trains from August 15, provided they have completed 14 days after getting fully vaccinated.

In addition, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that all public gardens, playgrounds, chowpatties and beaches in Mumbai will now remain open from 6 am to 10 pm.
