1,600 Mahul residents were unable to vote as their names were not there in the voter's list. These residents who have now been rehabilitated previously lived at Mahul which is also known as the toxic hell of Mumbai.

The residents had to face a similar fate during the Lok Sabha elections as well which were held on May 2019. Previously, during their struggle, they had expressed their discontent by stating that they would not be voting for the ruling party i.e. Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) in any upcoming elections. 

As stated in the Free Press Journal, the residents have said that the Election Commission (EC) has deleted their names without following any proper mechanism and due to this they have not been able to exercise their basic right to vote.
