Despite objections from the opposition parties, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has said that the lockdown will be lifted in a staggered manner as the coronavirus threat still remains.

On Saturday, Thackeray said that the process of lifting the lockdown in Maharashtra will be initiated in a stepwise manner. While interacting with the state COVID task force, the Chief Minister indicated that he won’t rush his decision to lift the lockdown as he doesn’t want the second wave of the coronavirus.

Thackeray stated that the countries which lifted the lockdown had to reimpose it. He also pointed out that the coronavirus doesn’t only affect senior citizens but youngsters and children as well.

The Chief Minister noted that it was important to figure out how to lift the lockdown rather than when to come out of it. “I don’t want the second wave of coronavirus in Maharashtra. Those who lifted the lockdown had to impose it again,” Thackeray said.

He also said that the lockdown relaxations are being provided under state government’s ‘Mission Begin Again’. Talking to the state COVID task force, Thackeray asserted that chasing coronavirus should not stop as the threat is still present.

“Monsoon season is still active in Maharashtra. We have to be cautious about rain-related diseases along with our efforts to chase the coronavirus,” he added.

Maharashtra has been one of the worst-hit states in India due to the coronavirus outbreak. The number of coronavirus cases in the state has reached 5,95,865 and the death toll remains at 20,037. In Mumbai alone, the number of COVID-19 cases has reached 1,28,726 and the death toll remains at 7,133. On Sunday, nearly 11,111 coronavirus cases were reported in the state.
