More than 12,500 police constable posts to be filled in Maharashtra

In a Cabinet meeting held on September 16, 2020, the government decided to fill 12,528 police positions in the state. The process for the same will begin soon. Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, on Wednesday, addressed the media and informed the same.

Maharashtra's Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) government, on Wednesday, September 16, held a cabinet meeting and as of one of the important agendas, decided to fill the vacancies in the police department on an immediate basis. State Home Minister, Anil Deshmukh, addressed the media with regards to the matter and said that a total of 12,528 police personnel recruited over the next few months. 

This is the first time in the history of Maharashtra that recruitment is being planned at such a large scale. Furthermore, the process for the same will begin soon, and the cabinet has unanimously decided to give opportunities to the youth in urban and rural areas of Maharashtra.

The decision was also taken in view of the Supreme Court's recent interim order staying implementation of 2018 law that granted reservation to the Maratha community in education and jobs. Following this, the government has directed the officials at the home department to take necessary steps in consultation with the law and judiciary department.

As per records, a total of 5,297 posts for police constable were created in 2019, and 6726 posts were created in 2020. Meanwhile, 505 of the 975 posts are to be filled in the first phase at Mira Bhayandar and Vasai- Virar police teams.

Over the last few months, Maharashtra Police has played an integral role in maintaining safety of the citizens, amidst the coronavirus outbreak. Strict guidelines were imposed by the government, in consultation with the police, and law and order were maintained at all times in the state. Keeping this in mind, the cabinet has noted that there is a dire need for police officers, and hence it is necessary to fill 100 per cent vacancies in the department.

As per 2019, the state has 5297 vacancies in Police - Group C category. Further, 6726 posts in the cadre of Police Peon, Police Peon Driver, Armed Police Peon keeping the scheduled retirement, promotion, resignation in mind for this year. Besides this, there are positions to be filled at the Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar Police Commissionerate. 

Besides this, appropriate decisions will be taken for candidates who have applied for police recruitments in 2019 and those who have completed IT. All the applications are being made through the portal.

Officials stated that the recruitment process for the post of Police Peon is lengthy as it goes through various stages like written test, physical test, verification of documents and more. Hence, the department is considering to fill most of the positions in a quicker recruitment process.
