Maharashtra Transport Minister Anil Parab announced that the government will arrange ST (state transport) buses for people who want to visit Konkan on the occasion of Ganeshotsav.

The minister said that the devotees will be able to go to Konkan by ST buses during the Ganesh Chaturthi but will have to follow the safety protocols laid by the government to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

“The ST buses will be available for the people who want to go to their villages in Konkan on the occasion of Ganeshotsav. This is being allowed but with conditions. We have to take care that there is no crowding in Konkan during the festival,” Parab said.

The devotees in large number from different parts of the state including Mumbai, Thane and Pune go their respective villages in Konkan each year to celebrate Ganeshotsav. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has urged the people to keep the celebrations low-key amid coronavirus outbreak.

“It is the responsibility of the government to take care of those travelling to Konkan. This is why the government has arranged ST services until Konkan. However, the passengers will be allowed on certain conditions. The ST will provide information on the rules soon. The government has also asked for guidelines from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR),” Parab said.

Amid the increasing coronavirus cases in Maharashtra and the imposition of lockdown, there was uncertainty as to whether people will be allowed to go to Konkan or not. However, Shiv Sena’s Vinayak Raut clarified earlier that there is no ban on the movement to Konkan for Ganeshotsav.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nitesh Rane has asked the government to conduct COVID-19 tests for those visiting Konkan on the occasion of Ganeshotsav.
