Maharashtra relief and rehabilitation minister Vijay Wadettiwar on Sunday, February 21, said that the state government may impose a night curfew in some regions due to the spike in COVID-19 cases continues.

The state government is considering a 12-hour night curfew between 5 pm and 5 am and a harsh penalty of INR 1 lakh on wedding halls that are flouting COVID-19 norms and allowing over 50 people.

He also said that a meeting will be held with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in Mumbai next week to finalise the decision.

While addressing media, Wadettiwar said, "The coronavirus cases are increasing on daily basis in several districts of Maharashtra. Due to this, an order to enforce the coronavirus norms has been given to all district magistrates. They have also have been authorised to take decisions in view of the pandemic situation.”

“We are also considering regulating vegetable markets. Such places may be allowed to remain open from 10 am to 5 pm with restrictions,” he said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray addressed a press conference on Sunday, February 21 at 7 pm.

He mentioned that the state has reported almost 7,000 new cases. Uddhav Thackeray termed the coronavirus situation in the state "serious". He went on to warn the people that lockdown would have to be reimposed if daily COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the next two weeks.

Addressing the people he mentioned that the government would be assessing the situation for the next "8 to 15 days" to ascertain if the current upsurge in daily figures is a fresh wave of infections. He also urged people to follow coronavirus protocols to avoid lockdown.

CM Thackeray also announced in this address that from Monday, February 22 all political, religious and social gatherings will be prohibited in the state.
