Supreme Court in its ruling has maintained that the students cannot be promoted without holding final year examinations. UdaySamant who is the higher and technical education minister of Maharashtra today in the press conference said, "We will have to respect the Supreme Court's order. We will follow the directive and prepare for the future course of action taking into account the health and safety of over eight lakh students".

In its judgement, Supreme Court upheld the decision taken b University Grants Commission (UGC) to hold final year exams and maintained that the state or the university cannot promote the children based on past performance alone. Furthermore, a bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan said if any state feels that due to the coronavirus outbreak and the situation in the state they will not be able to organise exams by the said date, then they must connect with the UGC and request for the new dates.

In nutshell, the exams will be further postponed for the students and they will have to wait to know what are the new dates for examinations proposed by the UGC.

Parallelly, in the past three-four days, there has also been a lot of to and fro in regards to holding entrance examinations. Earlier on August 17, the Supreme Court had rejected a petition filed by several students seeking cancellation of the exams further stating that the NEET for medical admissions and the JEE examinations for IIT admissions would be held as per the scheduled schedule. As per the schedule, the JEE examinations are to be held from September 1 to 6 and the NEET exam is to be held on September 13.

On Friday, August 28, six ministers from non-BJP states filed a review petition in the apex court in a bid to seek review of its order allowing the Centre to conduct the JEE and NEET entrance examinations this year amidst the pandemic.
