Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday shared the list of 101 people who were arrested in connection with the Palghar mob lynching incident and also said that none of the arrested accused is a Muslim.

During his address on social media, Anil Deshmukh accused the opposition of giving communal colour to the mob lynching in Palghar and termed the incident as unfortunate.

Deshmukh said that the Palghar mob lynching happened due to the rumours doing rounds about child kidnappers and thieves roaming in the area. The entire incident is being probed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

“Palghar mob lynching is a grotesque incident which happened due to rumours on social media about child kidnappers & thieves prowling in the area. A high-level inquiry is going on & meanwhile people are requested not to fall for rumours & verify the facts from trusted sources (sic),” Anil Deshmukh tweeted.

The Maharashtra Home Minister further informed that a special IG level officer in CID was investigating the matter while stating that 101 people were arrested within 8 hours of the offence.

“We are releasing the names of accused today, there’s no Muslim in the list. There was a sound heard in the video 'Oye Bas', people circulated it online and some called it 'Shoeb Bas’. The state is fighting the pandemic and some people are trying to bring communal angle in this matter,” Deshmukh said.

On April 16, three people were lynched by an angry mob with sticks and stones. The three men who were killed have been identified as Sushil Giri Maharaj (35), Chikane Maharaj Kalpavrikshgiri (70) and Nilesh Telgane (35). They were travelling towards Surat to attend the funeral of common acquaintance and were killed by the mob on suspicion that they were child-kidnappers and organ harvesters.

The incident happened in Gadchinchale village in Palghar district of Maharashtra. The police have arrested 110 people involved in the mob lynching. Of the 110 people, 101 have been sent in police custody till April 30 while other nine have been sent to juvenile homes.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday informed that the investigation into the Palghar ‘mob lynching’ incident has been transferred to the Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Meanwhile, two police officers from Kasa police station in Palghar district have been suspended for alleged negligence on duty.
