Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Tuesday said that the accused in Palghar mob lynching will get strict punishment as per the law while stating that the incident is a “blot on humanity”.

Ajit Pawar further informed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was investigating the lynching incident and more than 100 people have been arrested in connection with the same.

“The Palghar incident is a blot on humanity, it is condemnable. A CID probe has already begun into the incident and more than 100 people have been arrested. All those who are guilty will be punished strictly as per the law,” Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said.

On April 16, three people were lynched by an angry mob with sticks and stones. The three men who were killed have been identified as Sushil Giri Maharaj (35), Chikane Maharaj Kalpavrikshgiri (70) and Nilesh Telgane (35). They were travelling towards Surat to attend the funeral of common acquaintance and were killed by the mob on suspicion that they were child-kidnappers and organ harvesters.

The incident happened in Gadchinchale village in Palghar district of Maharashtra. The police have arrested 110 people involved in the mob lynching. Of the 110 people, 101 have been sent in police custody till April 30 while other nine have been sent to juvenile homes.

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray informed that the investigation into the Palghar ‘mob lynching’ incident has been transferred to the Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Meanwhile, two police officers from Kasa police station in Palghar district have been suspended for alleged negligence on duty.

Speaking on the lockdown, Ajit Pawar appealed people to stay at home and not gather on roads while behaving “irresponsibly”. World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that the worst is yet ahead of us in relation to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Stay at home and don’t behave irresponsibly if you want him wrong. However, people are still gathering on roads without any reason. They are risking the lives of their families as well. This should stop,” Ajit Pawar said.
