In a surprise, the centre has appointed two teams to inspect the implementation of lockdown measures in Mumbai and Pune. The two teams will carry out an inspection for the supply of essential items, the health infrastructure while keeping a check on the safety of health professionals on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Along with this, the two teams will also examine the conditions at camps set up for labourers and the poor reporting back to the centre. The centre has designated six inter-ministerial teams - two each for Maharashtra and West Bengal and one each for Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

This was done after there were complaints about the implementation of lockdown measures. Reacting to this, the senior bureaucrats expressed surprise and said that adequate measures were taken.

“We have taken adequate measures, there was no scope for complaints,”  the Time of India quoted a senior bureaucrat as saying.

The teams will issue necessary directions to the state and submit reports to the Centre. The reason to constitute such teams was taken in the view of the increasing cases in cities like Mumbai and Pune as they have become the hotbeds for the coronavirus outbreak.

These committees have been set up under the provision of the Disaster Management Act and will focus on the implementation of lockdown measures as per the guidelines issued under the Disaster Management Act, the supply of essential items, social distancing norms, the safety of healthcare professionals among others.

Meanwhile, Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis has asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to withdraw the decision of not conducting COVID-19 tests of asymptomatic persons.

Earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) decided to selectively test asymptomatic high-risk people. The civic body has also decided that a suspected coronavirus death will be subjected to audit before confirmed as one.
