Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar has condemned the Palghar ‘mob lynching’ incident and expressed his displeasure over those questioning the law and order situation in Maharashtra.

Pawar said that this was not the time to engage in political battles while stating that collective effort was required in order to combat the coronavirus outbreak. The BJP in Maharashtra has tried to corner the MVA government over the Palghar incident while demanding the resignation of state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

In a video message earlier, LoP in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis further stated the law and order situation in Maharashtra is not visible and demand a high-level enquiry into the matter. “Along with taking action against the culprits, the role of the police should also be looked at,” Devendra Fadnavis said.

Reacting to this, Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said that levelling allegations and calling for resignations of state ministers at the time of the coronavirus outbreak should be avoided.

“Some people are talking and raising questions about law and order situation of Maharashtra. The (Palghar) incident occurred due to rumours. We make such remarks in normal but this was not the time. We all need to focus on the fight against the coronavirus,” NCP chief Sharad Pawar said during his interaction via Facebook Live.

Condemning the Palghar mob lynching, Pawar said that the incident was “unfortunate” and it should not have happened. Police acted quickly and arrested over 100 people involved in the incident on the same night, the NCP chief said.

The Maharashtra Police has arrested 110 people in connection with the Palghar incident where the angry mob ‘lynched’ three people including two Sadhus and a driver. Of the 110 people arrested, 101 people have been sent police custody till April 30 while other 9 have been sent to a juvenile home.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday informed that the investigation into the Palghar ‘mob lynching’ incident has been transferred to the Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Meanwhile, two police officers from Kasa police station in Palghar district have been suspended for alleged negligence on duty.
