Palghar mob lynching case transferred to CID, two police officers suspended: Uddhav Thackeray

The lynching of two sadhus and their driver in Palghar is being portrayed as a communal incident. The Maharashtra government has warned those giving communal angle to the issue.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday informed that the investigation into the Palghar ‘mob lynching’ incident has been transferred to the Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Meanwhile, two police officers from Kasa police station in Palghar district have been suspended for alleged negligence on duty. 

Anand Rao Kale, an assistant police inspector, and another sub-inspector have been suspended until an inquiry is conducted into the mob lynching incident that occurred on April 16 in Palghar. Maharashtra Police IGP (Kokan Range), Niket Kaushik placed the two officers under suspension. 

The three men who were killed have been identified as Sushil Giri Maharaj (35), Chikane Maharaj Kalpavrikshgiri (70) and Nilesh Telgane (35). They were travelling towards Surat to attend the funeral of common acquaintance and were killed by the mob on suspicion that they were child-kidnappers and organ harvesters. The incident happened in Gadchinchale village in Palghar district of Maharashtra.

“We have transferred the case to the State CID and Additional Director General Atulchandra Kulkarni has been instructed to personally oversee the investigation into the Palghar incident,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said.

Earlier, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh stated that victims and the accused belong to the same religion. Moreover, Congress leader Sachin Sawant levelled serious allegations against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in connection with the Palghar ‘mob lynching’ incident alleging that majority of the people arrested were the members of the BJP. 

The Maharashtra Police has arrested 110 people in connection with the Palghar incident where the angry mob ‘lynched’ three people including two Sadhus and a driver. Of the 110 people arrested, 101 people have been sent police custody till April 30 while other 9 have been sent to a juvenile home.
